Best Wordle Starting Words, Ranked

Best Wordle starting words

Why the opener matters more than you think

Your first guess is the only one you make with zero information, so it should buy the maximum information. A strong opener tests the most frequent letters in the English language, which means your second guess starts from knowledge instead of luck. Players who open well average under four guesses; players who open with a random favorite word average closer to five.

The top 5 starting words, ranked

1. SLATE: Three elite consonants (S, L, T) plus the two most common vowels (A, E). It consistently ranks in the top 5 across independent computational analyses.

2. CRANE: The mathematician's pick. C, R, N with A and E; R alone appears in roughly 27% of all Wordle answers.

3. TRACE: Tests the -ACE, -ATE, and -ARE families that cover a huge share of solutions.

4. STARE: Same five high-value letters as SLATE in a different order; simulations show it pulls average solves under four guesses.

5. CRATE: Nearly identical profile to TRACE/CRANE. If you like hard consonants up front, start here.

The vowel first school: AUDIO

AUDIO takes a different philosophy: test four of the five vowels in one shot. It tells you almost nothing about consonants, but the vowel map it returns typically eliminates 60 to 70% of candidates immediately. If you hate being stuck on vowel placement, AUDIO (followed by something like STERN) is a legitimate two-opener system.
